Course Description
This is the regular course for Ma Bansuri & Vocal, through which students will be well versed with the theoretical aspects of Hindustani Classical Music. This course throws light on the Shatra of various Raagas. It helps in understanding similar Raagas.
This is a regular core theory course for postgraduate students of music. The course is designed to give an understanding of the relationship of music with the other disciplines of knowledge. It will also enable research in interdisciplinary areas. This course can be conducted in a workshop mode.
Course Introduction
The students of music need to understand the music not just from the performing aspect, but also from its relationship with the other knowledge streams. This course is designed to offer an understanding of music from the perspective of some other systems of knowledge such as philosophy, sociology, psychology, and music therapy. The course will help students to understand how these streams are related and also open avenues for research in such interdisciplinary areas.
A student of vocal and melody-instrumental music has to be well versed in reading and writing notations of the compositions using all the available systems, to work professionally in the music fraternity. A classical musician must know the Raag Shastra to maintain the pure form of a Raag. This syllabus is designed to give a sound background of Shastra to the performance.
Course Objective
This course is designed with the following objectives –
Ø To understand notation writing systems.
Ø To study Samaprakrutik Raag
Ø To build the composing ability of poetry and write notation for the same
Ø To be able to write difficult Laykaris of Tala
Ø To introduce the students of music to the streams such as philosophy, sociology, psychology, and music therapy
Ø To introduce the students to the relationship of music with the other systems of knowledge such as philosophy, sociology, psychology, and music therapy
Ø To introduce the therapeutic use of music
Ø To encourage interdisciplinary research in music
Course Outcome
After completion of this course, the students will be able to –
Ø Understand music from the perspective of philosophy, sociology, and psychology
Ø Explore the therapeutic use of music through research
Ø Understand the avenues of applied music as career options
Ø Become a better artist and teacher with an understanding of the relationship of music with philosophy, sociology, and psychology

Prerequisites and other constraints
This course requires at least three years of music training, preferably at the undergraduate level. Students from other disciplines like philosophy, sociology, and psychology can also take the course if they have a basic understanding of music.
