PS112 Biopsychology (4 credits)


This course will provide an overview of biological basis of behaviour and how the experiences and behaviour are influenced by biological processes. Further, to develop an understanding of the influence of behaviour, cognition, and the environment on human body. The course will also introduce the neurobiological basis of psychological function and dysfunction. The aim of the course is to help students to learn how experience and behaviour are closely linked with biological processes and its influence.  The course will prepare students to take up advanced courses in applied psychology.

  1. Module 2: The Functioning brain

Topics:

Neural conduction of the Brain
Synaptic transmission. 
Central Nervous System-Structure and functions.
Peripheral Nervous System -Structure and functions. 
Methods of studying brain behavior relationship – CAT, MRI, PET


  1. Module Nervous Systems: Functions and Dysfunctions

Topics:


Functional abnormalities of neurotransmitters: dopamine and serotonin hypothesis.
Neuroplasticity of Brain (neural degeneration, neural regeneration, and neural reorganization)
Hemispheric specialization.

Structure and functions of Major glands: Thyroid, Adrenal, Gonads, Pituitary, Pancreas and Pineal.
