INDIAN ART APPRECIATION (MINOR COURSE: EVEN SEMESTER)

Art is the window that opens up to a whole world of culture, thought and life of any society. India is a multi-cultured society but in its diversity is inherent the core philosophical idea of unity and harmony. This aspect of plurality and monistic tendency is reflected in every art form of the country. The focus of this course shall lie in enabling the students to develop aesthetic sensitivities and apply their knowledge of the art forms in the process of ‘appreciation’ of any Indian art form. This course shall attempt to inform the students of the basic artistic elements of at least five major art forms viz., architecture, sculpture & iconography, painting, theatre & dance, music & instrumental music. The course shall, however, not embark on the artistic technicalities suitable for an artist, but it shall focus on ‘refining’ the aesthetic mind with relevant and required artistic information. This course shall not look into the Indian art forms through the lens of chronological, historical account but shall cover various aspects of art forms from ancient, medieval and modern India. The entire course shall be based on the founding aesthetic principles of Bharata, his predecessors and his followers.
