Experimental Psychology  is  the  branch of psychology  concerned  with the  scientific  investigation of  the responses of  individuals to stimuli  in  controlled situations.  Experimental psychologists  are  interested  in  exploring  theoretical  questions,  often  by  creating  a  hypothesis  and  then setting  out  to  prove  or  disprove  it  through  experimentation.  They  study  a  wide  range  of  behavioral  topics,  including  sensation,  perception,  attention,  memory,  cognition  and  emotion.  This course  introduces  what  experimental  psychology  and  also  provide  practical  exposure  to  the students  to  design  and  conduct  experiments  in  the  areas  of  sensation,  perception,  cognition  and learning.  

This  course is  aimed  at  providing an intermediate  and  advanced  understanding  about  statistics  and  its use  in  research.  This  will  enable  a  deeper  understanding  of application  of  Statistics  in  Quantitative research.  


Course  Objectives 

1.  To develop  skills  to use  advanced  inferential statistics.   

2.  To develop skills to use  advanced correlational statistics in research.   


Course  Outcomes 

After  the  completion of  this course, students will  be  able to: 

1.  Apply  advanced inferential statistics in research. 

2.  Perform advanced  correlational statistics in research.


Course Introduction

Psychopathology is the scientific study of psychological disorders, their signs and symptoms, and causative factors. It is a field that is constantly developing through the contributions of several researchers and practitioners across the world. The present course is introduced to help you develop a basic understanding of the theoretical concepts of abnormal psychology and learn about various psychological disorders along with their signs and symptoms and clinical features. The course will also introduce you to the core research areas, basic psychological methods to identify and assess psychopathology, treatment procedures and mental health care services. Acts and policies of the government on mental health and issues and challenges in the field will also be discussed.

Course Objectives

  • To help participants develop an understanding of the various theoretical conceptualizations of psychopathology
  • To help participants develop basic knowledge of signs and symptoms and clinical features of major mental disorders 
  • To equip participants with the necessary skills to identify the signs and symptoms of mental disorders through observation, clinical interviewing and mental status examination
  • To help participants acquire basic information regarding the major biological and psychosocial approaches to the management of mental disorders
  • To help participants appreciate the mental healthcare delivery system in the country and the legal aspects involved.

  • On successful completion of the course, the participants will be able to
  • Define abnormality adhering to scientific concepts and criteria of abnormality
  • Understand the various causal factors of mental disorders
  • Observe and identify the various signs and symptoms of mental illness
  • Conduct clinical interview and mental status examination
  • Prepare case reports of individuals having mental disorders
  • Develop primary knowledge of widely used treatment methods available for mental disorders
  • Learn about the mental healthcare delivery system and acts and policies governing it
